Some of the Great Ski Resorts in Southern California

by Jeff Yarbrough

Although many people equate Southern California with sunny beaches and deserts, the area also encompasses several skiing and snowboarding resorts that are a short distance from the LA area and have been ranked among the top in the country.
Six hours by car or one hour by plane from Los Angeles, Mammoth Mountain in the Eastern Sierra remains one of California's most popular ski destinations, with over 150 runs spread across more than 3,500 acres. Only 90 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, Mountain High in the San Gabriel Mountains offers skiers and snowboarders three distinct mini-resorts. Located 14 miles north, Mt. Baldy has an old school, glitz-free vibe and relies mostly on natural snow. It features six double black diamond runs among its more than 25 runs of varying difficulty, making it an attractive choice for advanced skiers.
Located in the San Bernardino Mountains, Big Bear Mountain hosts Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. The former offers a traditional park with groomed runs, while the latter boasts a unique all-day and all-night terrain park. With interchangeable lift tickets and a free shuttle bus, however, skiers and snowboarders can easily explore both.
